Course Description
This course followed in sequence the Research Methods II course and served as the culminating research course. Students utilized peer review and editing, and various elements of individualized instruction while preparing their final research report. Students prepared to have their final reports in a publishable format to submit to a medical dosimetry journal.
Assessments & Activities
Students were assessed and graded on their performance and participation in completing 2 drafts and a final paper of the capstone research project, preparing and submitting the final paper to a medical dosimetry journal for publication, peer evaluations, self reflection, and e-portfolio contributions.
Capstone Research Project
This was the final of 3 required research courses for the Medical Dosimetry program. It continued where the previous research course left off, with the second draft of our capstone research project with the necessary revisions complete being due at the beginning of the course. Our group received a grade and edits from our instructors on this draft. The third draft was due shortly after, which was also graded and edited. There was a great deal of rewording and revisions to how we presented our data that needed to be addressed. Because of the complexity of the required revisions, conference calls were used in conjunction with emails to discuss how to proceed with the edits. Once our final drat was satisfactory and turned in for grading, our group prepared our final paper for submission for publication to the Medical Dosimetry Journal. We are currently waiting to hear back from the editor on the status of the submission of our article. Regardless of it gets accepted for publication, I am extremely proud of the work my group did.

Self Reflection
At the completion of every course students are asked to reflect on a series of questions that focused on their knowledge gained, skills, areas of opportunity, and overall thoughts about the course.
The new knowledge and skills I gained during this course were...
Though I have written many research papers prior to this program, this the first one that I have been a part off that has been submitted to a scholarly journal to be published. As such, it was interesting learning about the submission process and the formatting requirements of the research paper.
The new knowledge and skills will benefit me...
I hope to continue to conduct and publish research throughout my career as a medical dosimetrist and feel confident in doing so with the skills and knowledge I have acquired and cultivated throughout all 3 research courses of this program.
I struggle with...
AMA formatting continues to be a challenging area for me. Although I do feel more confident now than I did at the beginning of this program, I still require more review and practice to solidify my understanding and correct use of AMA formatting.
I feel pretty good about...
I feel pretty good about my understanding of the entire research process from start to finish. I felt that throughout all 3 of the research courses within this program were well laid out and it was easy to navigate through the entire research process.
Other reflective thoughts...
I feel extremely grateful to have been able to work on this capstone project with the members of my group. We worked together very well and everyone was so willing to take on whatever tasks needed to be done. Although we faced some challenges with wording and presentation of our data, I'm happy with our final draft. Finishing this paper was a big accomplishment and I'm excited at the prospect of being published in a scholarly journal.
